Simon James | Two Dimensional Sculpture
Simon James is an English artist who lives and works in Munich since 2001. He has developed a process of working which combines both painting and sculpture. Applying coloured Gesso, (previously used by atists as a material for preparing the 'Ground') in a series of layers, he then reduces the surface by scraping and sanding.

Working out from, and then back into the surface, the percept ion shifts from two -dimensional painting on the outside to deeply layered sculpture on the inside. Minutely detailed juxtapositions of colour and form emerge, which in the finished work invite the viewer to explore more deeply as the abstract landscape unfolds.

By experiencing this shift in focus and movement into the painting, an essential part of Simon James' creative process is relived. Throughout this creative process, conscious decision-making is deeply intertwined with embracing the uncontrollable and following serendipitous discoveries of newly uncovered remains. His work reflects upon the boundary and relationship between one's own conscious control and subconscious regulation as they flow into each other.

The experiential context between viewer and painting has the potential to go beyond the preconceived, exploring borders between concepts not as restrictive lines, but as open space.
